Common Washer Problems

Pick what's happening in the laundry room. Every entry explains the usual cause, what you can do meanwhile, and the parts we test first.

Problem 01

Grey Water Stays In The Drum

The cycle ends and the drum is still sloshing. In DDO homes we most often pull a coin, a hair elastic or a toddler's sock out of the pump housing; a flattened outlet hose behind the machine is the next most likely culprit. After clearing it we time a complete drain so you know it's genuinely sorted.

While You Wait

Put old towels under the front, open the hatch at floor level and empty the trap into a shallow dish. Once a pump starts buzzing with no water moving, give it a rest rather than restarting.

Problem 02

Clothes Come Out Dripping

Wash and rinse look fine, then spin barely gets going and the laundry comes out heavy. The machine refuses high speed until its lock reports a secure close, so a cracked lid switch or worn door lock tops the list; on older top-loaders a glazed belt slips instead. A meter settles which in a few minutes.

While You Wait

Run a half load on the spin-only setting. Whether you hear the lock click into place when the lid closes is useful for us to know.

Problem 03

Loud Thumping During Spin

Once spin ramps up the cabinet starts hammering the wall. Shocks and suspension springs wear out with years of heavy duvets and towels, letting the tub swing wide. They're replaced as a matched set so the drum sits centred on every side.

While You Wait

Rock the machine gently by each corner; if it wobbles, wind the feet until all four bite the floor. Wash duvets on their own until the repair.

Problem 04

Door Won't Open After The Cycle

The screen reads finished, the handle won't move. Leftover water holds the lock shut for safety, so slow draining is frequently the real issue; when the drum is empty and it still won't release, the lock assembly has given out.

While You Wait

Switch the machine off at the wall for ten minutes. Some locks let go by themselves once the drum is empty.

Problem 05

Musty Smell From The Drum

Freshly washed towels carry a cellar smell. Front-loaders hold moisture in the rubber boot and the sump below the drum, and too much soap gives mildew something to feed on. We scrub the boot, empty the trap and show you the habits that keep it away.

While You Wait

Prop the door and the soap drawer open after the last load of the day, and measure HE detergent instead of pouring.

Problem 06

Machine Won't Take In Water

Press start, hear a click or a hum, and no water arrives. Fine mesh screens at the hose inlets clog with grit, a solenoid coil on the valve burns out, or a supply line gets squashed. Cleaning the screens alone revives a good share of these machines.

While You Wait

Reach behind and turn each valve handle fully; then check the rubber hoses aren't trapped behind the cabinet.

Appliance Brands We Service

From the fridge your parents bought to the smart washer you got last year, these are the makers we repair week in, week out.

Whirlpool KitchenAid Maytag GE Samsung LG Frigidaire Bosch Kenmore Electrolux

Washer Error Codes

Each one is tagged with the brand that uses it, since the same letters can mean different things on different makes.

F8E1

Whirlpool

Long fill: water took too long to reach level, often a closed tap or clogged inlet screen.

F5E2

Whirlpool

The door lock failed to engage or release on a front-load model.

E18

Bosch

Water isn't draining; check the pump filter and drain hose for blockages.

PE

LG

The water-level pressure sensor is reading abnormally.

nd

Samsung

Drain failure on Samsung units, often a blocked pump trap or bent outlet line.

Sud

Samsung

Too much foam in the drum; the machine pauses to let suds settle.

Each manufacturer uses its own codes, and meanings can shift between model years. If a code returns after a five-minute unplug, book a technician and we'll diagnose it properly.

Washer Repair Reviews

Feedback from DDO households after their washer repair.

Our work clothes were stuck in half a drum of grey water. The culprit was a toddler's sock wedged in the pump. He pulled it out, ran a spin to prove it, and we were done before lunch.

Gisele M.Westpark

Top-loader washed but never spun. The lid switch had a hairline crack. Cheap part, fast swap.

Leander T.Sunnybrooke

Machine hammered the wall every spin. All four shocks replaced. Ran longer than the estimate, but it's planted now.

Delphina A.St-Jean

Door wouldn't release with towels inside. He emptied the drum, found the lock had failed, sorted the same afternoon.

Hollis J.Roxboro

Everything smelled like a cellar. He cleaned the boot and the trap and gave me detergent advice. Smells like laundry again.

Marguerite S.Kirkland

Nothing came in when we pressed start. Grit had clogged both inlet screens. Cleaned, and it fills quickly now.

Lazare P.Pointe-Claire

Washer Checks Before You Call

Several washer visits could be avoided with five minutes and a towel. Try these first.

1

Is the pump filter clear?

Lay towels on the floor, open the small hatch at the bottom front, and twist the filter out to clear it.

2

Are both taps open?

The hot and cold supply handles behind the washer must be fully open.

3

Is the drain hose kinked?

Slide the washer out a little and follow the outlet hose for any sharp bend.

4

Is the load balanced?

One waterlogged comforter can halt the spin. Spread items out and retry.

5

Is the door boot clean?

Peel back the rubber gasket and wipe away lint, hair and slime trapped in the fold.

6

Have you tried a reset?

Cut power for a few minutes; control hiccups often clear on their own.

Still not working? Book a visit and we'll take it from there.
